The Institute of Orthopedic Research and Biomechanics is seeking for highly motivated
PhD students (f/m/d)
in the field of Bone Regeneration and musculoskeletal research

The University Hospital Ulm and its employees stand for a modern and high quality patient care, excellent university research and medical education focused on the future as well as apprenticeships in attractive professional fields. The requirements for this are qualified and committed employees.
Institute:
The Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Biomechanics  (www.biomechanics.de) investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders with the aim of developing novel therapeutic strategies. The institute contributes to the Trauma Research Center Ulm (ZTF), the Collaborative Research Centre CRC1149 “Danger Response, Disturbance Factors and Regeneration after Acute Trauma”, and the CRC1506 “Aging at Interfaces”. Our research combines innovative experimental methods, interdisciplinary approaches, and extensive national and international collaborations. We offer an excellent scientific environment and a supportive, open-minded atmosphere.

Project description:
The projects focus on the regulation of bone regeneration, particularly in the context of osteoporosis and impaired fracture healing. The aim is to improve the understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating bone turnover and repair in order to identify novel therapeutic strategies. The two PhD projects will address distinct aspects of this research field. The methodological spectrum includes mouse models, cell culture techniques, molecular biology, (immune)histology, and imaging techniques. PhD students will have the opportunity to join the International Graduate School of Molecular Medicine Ulm (IGradU).

Start of the project: July 2026, Duration: 3 years

Requirements:
We are looking for excellent and highly motivated candidates holding an M.Sc. degree in biology, molecular medicine, biochemistry, or a related field. Applicants should have a strong interest in biological and medical research and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary approaches.

We offer:
The opportunity to work in a dynamic and highly motivated research team with excellent scientific infrastructure. Salary and benefits are provided according to the German TV-L system. In addition, we offer training and professional development opportunities, workplace health promotion programs, and support for work–family balance.
